Is There a Vaccine for Gonorrhea?
Recent fears that gonorrhea is developing a general antibiotic resistance and the millions of people worldwide becoming infected each year research into a vaccine against this insidious infection has been moving at a brisk pace. Studies coming out of New Zealand suggest that a vaccine might be close on the horizon. Initially developed for protecting against meningitis B, this trial vaccine was apparently able to reduce the incidence of gonorrheal infection in a group of 15,000 students by a full 33%. The bacterium that causes meningitis B is closely related to the one responsible for gonorrheal infections. At this time the exact mechanism for the immune response is not fully understood so further research is due. This would be the first time in history that a vaccine has been shown to offer protection against gonorrhea.
