Romantic Ways to Propose at Christmas

Best known for spreading cheer and goodwill among mankind, Christmas can also be a great time to propose to the one you love. This is not only the time when people are in a generous frame of mind and thus your partner more likely to accept you but this is also the season to snuggle up to your partner while it snows outside. So take advantage of the infectious Yuletide spirit and pop the question to your beloved.

While decking up the tree

One of the most enjoyable Christmas conventions is putting up the Christmas tree. While it is largely portrayed as a family thing, putting up and decorating the tree together can also make a couple feel really close to each other. This year, while you go through this ritual with your sweetheart, make it even more special by adding on a proposal. Buy a Christmas tree ornament with which you can propose for instance a picture frame ornament which will help her picture your future together.  Look for an ornament that's engraved with a title such as "Our First Christmas." Write up a proposal onto a card that will fit inside the frame. While decking up the tree, if she asks about it, tell her to take a peek at the card inside the frame. And when she does, drop down to your knees with the question, “will you marry me”. Indeed, after you get married, you can replace the card with a wedding photo, or leave the card inside so you can reminisce about the proposal every Christmas.

A special Christmas gift

If you have been thinking of getting hitched, this holiday season can offer the perfect opportunity to propose to your beloved. Proposing at midnight on Christmas Eve guarantees that the engagement ring is the first Christmas gift she receives. Hide the engagement ring in one of the presents under the Christmas tree. If you wish, you can even tell her to stay out of the room while you place her Christmas gifts under the tree. Turn on the tree lights and set up candles nearby. PLay her favorite Christmas songs and call her into the room. At first your girlfriend will think that you merely wanted to take up the Christmas celebrations a notch higher, but then invite her to open the presents together. When your girlfriend opens the package containing the ring, pop the question and explain that marrying her is the only Christmas gift you want.
For a quirkier take on the above idea, hang a Christmas stocking in an unexpected place on Christmas Eve night, such as inside the cabinet that holds her coffee mugs or in front of her dresser. Fill the Christmas stocking with glitter, confetti and a small piece of paper that expresses your love and asks her to marry you.

Get grooving

A girl fond of her dancing shoes may love being proposed to on the dance floor at a happening discotheque. Take your girlfriend dancing to a Christmas Eve party or a nightclub having a Christmas theme but give no hint that you have planned something special. Then while her favorite dance numbers are playing, ask the DJ to hand you the microphone so that you can dedicate a song to her, after which announce your proposal in front of the whole crowd.

Make it classy

Yet another romantic way to propose to your girlfriend would be to take her out at a fancy restaurant on Christmas day. Go the whole hog and turn up in a dinner jacket after having stepped out of a chauffeur-driven limousine.  And while she is taking in the chandeliers, the crystal on the table and the live music at the restaurant, request the waiter  to bring in the chef’s special which would naturally be a covered plate with the ring inside it.

From high above

If your girlfriend is an adventure freak, you could come up with a truly mind-boggling way to propose to her. Plan to take her out for a ride in a chopper, twin-seat glider or plane. But before that, write the words “will you marry me” on a stretch of snow-clad hill slope or land along a pre-determined route. And when the two of you pass that way, make sure that your girlfriend sees the proposal from up in the air. However be sure that not a lot of time transpires between the writing and the flying or the tracks in the snow will begin to melt. While you may have to put in some effort and planning for this one, you may find the result more than worth the trouble.

Tune in

Most people have a favorite Christmas program on the radio or FM which they make it a point to listen every year. If your girlfriend has one too, one of the most exciting ways to propose would be to have the question pop in during  such a radio show that your girlfriend is particularly fond of. Arrange with the studio beforehand to announce your proposal at a strategic time like just before the announcement of winners at the show. However be sure to casually ask your girlfriend if she is going to catch tonight’s show since you don’t want her to miss the proposal after you have gone through all the trouble of fixing it. Most importantly, arrange to be present with her when the question comes so that you can witness that priceless look of amazement and love on her face.

Bring on the snowman

And then what good is proposing on Christmas if it doesn’t include a snowman. Build a snowman holding a banner saying ‘Marry Me’. Ask your sweetheart to follow you outside on some pretext and  as she gasps in surprise, fall down on your knees and do the needful.

With family and friends

If you – and especially your partner - don’t mind making friends and family part of the proposal, here is a great idea. Write a "Will You Marry Me" song and fit it to a popular Christmas tune. Teach it to all of your friends and family members. Arrange a Christmas party and instruct them to sing the song when you give them a signal. As your girlfriends looks on with incredulity, step forward and propose to her amidst much cheering and clapping.
