Dating Ideas in Copenhagen, Denmark

The capital city of Denmark is both the financial and cultural hub of this Scandinavian country. As such Copenhagen offers its couples a wide range of dating options, ranging from outdoor activities to cultural venues and even fun-based ideas. So whether you are a local or are vacationing in this pretty city, pick up your partner and get ready to have a nice time with any of the following date ideas.

Bike along

Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. These days, a full 32% of Copenhagen residents are biking to work on a regular basis. And so what better way to have romantic time than go biking with your partner through the city’s popular public squares or along the lovely canals. Such a date is ideal for new couples who are just getting to know each other and may be uncomfortable in too intimate a space. The city's pro-bike culture goes so far as to allow you to rent a public bike for free with only a deposit required of you which is returned when you return the bike. Denmark's current bicycle infrastructure has achieved a commute that is not only quick and practical but clean and romantic for its couples too.

High culture

Treat your date to an evening of high culture by visiting the Royal Danish Opera House also known as the Opraen. Located on Copenhagen's harbor, this is one of the most expensive opera houses ever built, having been designed by Henning Larsen and officially opened in January 2005. In addition to the lavish productions of the Main Stage, the smaller black box theater 'Takkelloftet' is used for experimental performances. So you can make advance bookings to watch the Royal Danish Orchestra in action, a world famous opera or any other classical performance.  Yet another option to bask in the glow of high culture is to take in a performance at the Royal Danish Theatre which is Home of the Royal Theatre Company and the Royal Ballet. The theater was built by architect Wilhelm Dallerup in 1874 and has two stages: Gamle Scene (old stage) and Ny Scene (new stage). The building is especially impressive at night when crowds flock to the theatre in evening dress and even you can deck up to the nines for a classy evening. Once you emerge from the performance, you can even stop for a drink or a quick dinner at the nearby Hotel Opera the three-star, Arp-Hansen owned hotel imbued with a classic English style and a peaceful atmosphere.

In the midst of lovely nature

Copenhagen is well known for its numerous parks and gardens, any of which could make an ideal dating venue if you are looking forward to a romantic and private time with your partner. In times of good weather, stroll through gently sloping lawns or the shady avenues of the Frederiksberg Gardens; do a spot of boating at the central lake, visit the Frederiksberg Palace which stands at the top or sip tea at the wooden Chinese teahouse on one of the small artificial islands in the gardens. If your partner is fond of tropical beauty, then head for the Palm House of University of Copenhagen’s Botanic Garden. This 19th-century structure functions like a tropical oasis in the middle of the city. Here you can stroll amongst the tall tropical trees or sit down next to the orchids with your partner. And who knows soothed by the gentle bubbling of nearby water or carried away by the beauty of the surroundings you may find yourself planning a proposal. The Winter Garden of the elegant art museum Glyptoteket is another option if you wish for a picturesque venue for your date. The hallways of the museum lead to the gardens, next to the bubbling fountain and under the almost 100 foot-high dome where its honey-colored glass lending a warm glow to the palms below.

Star gazing at the Round Tower

For all those star-crossed lovers, a date at the Round Tower could make for an ideal way to get cozy up to each other. The Round Tower is one of the most famous renaissance landmarks of the city. Here a date planned around a night of stargazing could include champagne and flamenco on special nights like Valentine’s Day. Even if you are unable to make it to the popular star-gazing nights organized by the Tower, a date on a regular day can also be a wonderful experience. From the top of the Tower, look through the tower’s powerful telescopes, with the lens directed towards the moon and Orion’s Belt. And while coming down, don’t forget to have you photographed on the ‘kissing bench’ at the halfway level —and take the Polaroid memento home.

Traditional dinner date

Copenhagen offers many romantic venues where you can celebrate a special romantic occasion with a fancy dinner. You can dine in seclusion at a restaurant known as  1 t.h. - the name means first floor on the right – which offers ten-course culinary adventure. However this gourmet private dining experience should be booked well in advance. Or you can make reservations at gourmet Thai restaurant Kiin Kiin’s special ‘Table 9’; this private table allows for a more private dining experience, in the luxurious surroundings of the world’s only Thai restaurant to possess a Michelin star. Again if you are in the mood for Italian and money is not a problem, splurge at the Christianshavns Era Ora. Here you can indulge in a six-course taste extravaganza while overlooking the water by the canals of Christianshavn, the 18th-century building, or taking in the tasteful decor, with its moon-shaped lamps, lunar murals and earthy colors. However if you are looking for more affordable options on a dinner date, try the New York-style Italian joint Tony’s and its house specialty, spaghetti and meatballs which comes with plenty of parmesan and parsley. Or perhaps the newly-opened Indian restaurant Cave With its cozy backroom basement, simple, monotone décor, crisp white tablecloths and above all its fiery curries and chicken tikkas which are sure to set the night on fire for both of you.
