10 Romantic World War 2 Movies

The Second World War was a horrific episode of international conflagration with its abundance of tragic tales. Against this backdrop, there are some heart stopping romantic tales which have been captured for the silver screen by able directors. Some of the most romantic World War 2 movies are as follows:

1. Casablanca (1943)
   
   One of the best loved cinemas of all time, helmed by director Michael Curtiz is considered the classic war movie. It is the story of Rick Blaine (essayed by the broodingly handsome Humphrey Bogart) who runs his own night club in Casablanca, Morocco during the early years of World War 2. Rick’s café is a haven for European resistance leaders fleeing to America. One fine day,  a Czech resistance leader by the name of Victor Lazlo arrives at Rick’s seeking help to flee abroad. He is accompanied by his gorgeous wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman).  Now Ilsa happens to be the long lost love of Rick whom he lost in Paris, years back. Ilsa’ arrival reopens old wounds and sparks fly again between Rick and Ilsa. Rick is torn by his duty to Lazlo and his love for Ilsa which brings the story to a perfect conclusion.

2. In Harm’s Way (1965)
   
   Directed by Otto Preminger, the movie has enough material for a T.V. miniseries. In December 1941, a heavy cruiser, commanded by Captain Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne), and the destroyer Cassidy, under Lieutenant William McConnell (Thomas Tryon), are two among a few ships that have escaped the destruction wreaked by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The small fleet of a dozen ships under Torrey's command tries to seek out and destroy the enemy fleet. But the maneuver does not succeed to lack of fuel and an embarrassed Torrey is demoted to a desk job. The story further traces the relationship of Torrey with his estranged son (Brandon De Wild) and a romance with Lt. Maggie Haynes (Patricia Neal). The story goes on to the assigning of a new mission for Torrey.
    
3. A very long engagement(2004)
   
   Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet  and featuring Audrey Tautou, Gaspard Ulliel, Jean-Pierre Becker and  Dominique Bettenfeld. Audrey Tatou, the star of international hit, Amelie returns as Mathilde, a pretty but frail woman who has suffered childhood polio. She is engaged to marry Manech who is fighting with the army at the German front. Manech is sentenced to die when he is accused of faking injuries to escape the war front.  Mathilde is apprised of the death of Manech but she refuses to admit that he is no more as her heart tells her otherwise. After the end of the war, Mathilde hires a private investigator and together they set forth on a journey to search for Manech.
   
   
    
4. Pearl Harbor (2001)
   
   This lavish period drama by director Michael Bay was trumpeted to be the next Titanic. It is the story of how Ben Affleck is separated from this fiancé played by Kate Beckinsale during the Second World War. Kate and Ben’s friend, played by Josh Hartnett are stationed at Pearl Harbor when they get the news that Ben is killed in action. Things get complicated with Josh and Kate starting a romance and Ben arriving hale and hearty to Pearl Harbor.   The love triangle is put on hold by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the two friends are assigned on a mission against the Japanese.
    
5. The English Patient (1996)
   
   Anthony Minghella screen wrote and directed this Academy award-winning adaptation of novel by Michael Ondaatje about an ill-fated and tragic romance set against the backdrop of World War II. In an army hospital in Italy, Hana (Juliette Binoche), a Canadian nurse is caring for a pilot who crashed   in a plane wreck; he carries no identification and cannot recollect his name, so he' is named as “the English Patient,” because of   his accent. The story proceed how Hana pieces together his story- a tale of doomed love and betrayal.
    
6. Every Time We Say Goodbye (1986)
   
   Directed by Moshe Mizrahi and features Tom Hanks, Christina Marsillach and Benedict Taylor. Set against the Second World War, David (Tom Hanks) plays an American pilot serving the RAF. While convalescing in Jerusalem, he meets Sarah who‘s friend is engaged to his squadron leader. The two fall in love but face strong opposition from their families as Sarah is Jewish and David is a Protestant Christian.
    
7. From Here to Eternity (1953)
   
   Directed by Fred Zinnemann, it features Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. The story is set in Schofield Army Barracks in Honolulu, in the lazy days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The torrid affair between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr who is the wife of his commanding officer is the most memorable image of this movie. The movie won several Academy awards.
    
8. Yanks (1979)
   
   Directed by the talented John Schlesinger, the movie features a bevy of stars like Richard Gere, Lisa Eichhorn, Vanessa Redgrave, William Devane, Chick Vennera and Rachel Roberts .It is based on a story by Colin Welland.  Based in the period of the Second World War, the relationship of 3 American G.I.’s with three British women forms the crux of the story. The central romance is between Gere and Eichhorn, the daughter of shopkeepers. William Devane is on a higher social scale with an affair with a socialite played by Redgrave. The third pairing is between Vennera and Wendy Morgan. The three run into racism at a New Year’s Eve dance.
    
9. Resistance (2002)
   
   Directed by Todd Komarnicki. Wartime romance penned by Anita Shreve comes to life on the silver screen in this passionate story set against the background   of World War II . It  stars Bill Paxton, Julia Ormond, and Sandrine Bonnaire. American pilot Paxton has been gunned down in Nazi occupied Belgium. He is rescued by the Resistance but things become complicated as he falls in love with the wife of the Resistance leader, played by Ormond.
    
10. Dresden (2006)
    
    Directed by Roland Suso Richter. Anna (Felicitas Woll) is a kind nurse working in a German hospital and Robert (John Light) is a British pilot who is trapped within enemy lines. The unlikely romance between the nurse and the British pilot forms the story.
