Dating a Creative Person

Love and creativity have often gone hand in hand. Best-selling books are written about love overcoming all odds and songs are composed about lovers promising to be true to each other. But what is it like when it comes to dating the very people who write, sing, paint and design? Dating creative people requires some special skills and here are a few tips to get it right.

Hang out where they do

If you wish to date creative people, first of all you have to know where to find them. Unlike the ordinary kind, creative people will rarely be interested in whiling away time at bars and shopping malls. Rather they would prefer to engage in artistic pursuits during their leisure hours. Thus this is the right time if you are thinking of taking up a creative hobby like gardening or pottery; maybe you have always wanted to pick up a sensual dance form like salsa or dig into the finer points of Mediterranean cuisine but never had the time.  Now is the right moment to sign up for special interest classes or courses which will throw you in touch with creative people and if lucky you may find an attractive single among them too. Other places where you are likely to meet creative individuals are bookshops, art galleries, craft workshops, theaters, the opera and the like.

They have a unique way of loving you

The best part about dating a creative person is that you are likely to be wooed and courted in a highly individualistic manner. If you partner has excellent culinary skills, he/she just might whip up a special dessert for your birthday. On the other hand if he/she is a singer, you may be lucky to have a song written, set to music and sung just for you amidst a hundred people. Creative people have an unique way of showing their love which makes their partners feel so very special. Their offerings of love like a poem they have written or a coffee table that they have made specially for you are unlikely to be duplicated in the marketplace. It is this feeling of being loved in a unique way which is so flattering and fulfilling.

Not very materialistic

However if you are the kind of person who expects to be taken out to fancy restaurants and showered with expensive gifts on every date, a creative person may not be the right choice. Most of them do not put much store by materialistic values and things which merely bear a high price tag but have to aesthetic value are usually dismissed by creative people. Also young artists and musicians who are still trying to make their mark in the world may not have enough money to splurge on you. Even established artists and performers are notorious for their cavalier attitude towards money and while they may lavish an extravagant present on you today, they may have to overdraw from their bank account the next week. In fact most creative people are not very cued into saving and financial planning and this can be a dampener if you like to live the good life or at least expect some kind of financial stability from your partner.

Unconventional, mostly

Apart from their unpredictable attitude to money, creative people are usually unconventional at heart. This is often expressed in their appearance, dress sense and lifestyle which do not always conform to mainstream fashions. For many of them this individualist way of life is an attempt to experiment with various styles and eventually find their own technique in their creative pursuits. So if you are dating a creative person, don’t be taken aback if some day he/she pairs a leather jacket with sandals or turns up for a date with a grungy hairdo. Their unconventional lifestyle may be particularly disconcerting when you wish to introduce your partner to your friends and family who come from a very conventional background. Also your partner could dismiss the conventional dinner and movie routine as too boring and even though you may be yearning to celebrate an important occasion at a fancy restaurant, he/she flatly refuses to go to a ‘stuffy’ place. So you will have to plan unusual date ideas like a bonfire on the beach or a romantic scavenger hunt at your place to keep him/her interested.

Episodes of solitude

Creative people need a lot of time away by themselves – they use this time to think, imagine and engage in their particular creative pursuit. On these occasions, any intrusion – even from you – may be unwelcome. And even if you are interested in the same creative pursuit like playing the violin or cooking, still your partner may wish to be on his/her own to practice his/her art. Thus if you are one of those people who are emotionally dependent on their partners and do not take kindly to being shut out – no matter for how short a time – you may have difficulty coping with your partner’s bouts of solitude. Apart from this creative people can be moody and irritable when their work is not going well. At these times, you will simply have to let your partner be and wait for him/her to come back to you when they are feeling sociable again.

Demand adjustments

If you are thinking of settling into a long term relationship with your creative partner, be prepared to make certain adjustments in your daily life. Creative people usually work in a frenzy when their imaginative juices are flowing so much so that they lose all notion of time. They may skip meals, abandon appointments and leave chores undone when they are in the midst of composing music or painting a landscape. Thus you may have to take on more than your share of domestic responsibilities if married to a creative guy or girl. All kinds of financial planning, grocery shopping and taking care of the children may be your lot which in turn could leave you stressed out and angry. This is not to say that sharing a home with a creative person is impossible but just that you have to be open to adjustments and be more flexible in nature.
