Is There Any Link Between Herpes and Encephalitis?

A possible rare complication of a herpes infection is Herpes Simplex Encephalitis. In the majority of cases this complication arises from the herpes simplex virus type 1, with some cases, specifically in newborn babies, being caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2. This disease rarely occurs at the same time as oral or genital lesions. It mostly occurs during early childhood and affects males and females in equal numbers. Herpes Simplex Encephalitis accounts for 10 percent of all cases of encephalitis and it is the most common cause of acute encephalitis.
